Title: fence statement
Post by: AETC on Wed, Aug 14, 2013, 15:01 PM
In the recent announcement made by Johnny Lynch (aka Pictish Trail) he hit the nail right on the head - by November 2012 there was certainly very little of Fife represented by Fence Records Ltd.

Having become increasingly uncomfortable with Fence Records' direction I felt I had no choice but to bow out in November 2012. I have effectively locked myself out since, quietly operating under the Alter Ego Trading Company banner. I may be locked out for a while yet.

However, the nail hasn't been hit into the coffin lid of fence. fence is alive and well and re-launching in January 2014 from our base here in the East Neuk of Fife. As well as the AETC's "Bunfight (http://www.alteregotradingcompany.org/schedule.htm)" on August 31st, and "World Tour of Crail" in February, we'll resurrect our Easter event in conjunction with the Anstruther Improvements Association (http://www.anstrutherimprovements.org/) to celebrate in the recent refurbishment of the Dreel Halls.

fence turns 20 next December, I imagine we'll forget and host an awkward 23rd birthday bash in 2017.

Meantime, it's business as unusual here under the fence rock as CDRs of rare titles are burned and artwork cut up by hand, so from all at fence and the AETC - Gummi Bako, Withered Hand, OnTheFly, Lomond Campbell, Uncle Beesly, Emporium, Beam, Lidh, Jo Foster, HMS Ginafore (weather permitting) and me, King Creosote - may we wish Johnny all the best with his new venture out on Eigg.

As Billy Pilgrim (R.I.P.) and I used to joke with our favourite regular customers in the fence shop on South Street, St Andrews, of which Johnny was by far the best, "thanks a lot, and careful you don't let that door slam you on the ass on the way out!"

Thank you from the heart for your continued support going forward for both Johnny's new, and my own hackneyed ventures.

Kenny Anderson (aka King Creosote).

I only managed to get tickets to the gnomegame this year and really loved it but did wonder when you were not there that something was up!!  Is all out now and you seemed to be such good pals in the past. I remember the first time I met the two of you in Stirling at the tolboth and I have been a fan since, you had made CD sleeves out of chipwood paper and signed them specially for my husband who I had dragged along to the concert (but he too loved you both)!  I suppose at the end of the day Johnny is now living on an island on the other side of the country although, these days the internet helps overcome this a bit.  Good to see things are still happening in the East Neuk though, are there still tickets available for the Crail gig?
Feel sad that this has happened to you all  :(   life is too short.

Fence then, Fence sort of now, Probably Fence Forever.

Mind that time KC was singing Diamantina Drover at the end of Homegame whatever and he changed the line 'these fences run forever' to 'Fence will run forever'?

That was a genuine wow moment eh?

On reflection i'm really looking forward to both things taking off. If there are two people who deserve success (or happiness or whatever) it's Kenny and Johnny. They both have given us so much and only ever asked that we buy some records and dance about a bit. Both are an inspiration and the world is a much better place for them.

And as I've said elsewhere I still hope they can patch things up sometime. Y'never know ;)

So long live Fence and all the very very best to Johnny PT

Yup. I really don't see why people feel the need to choose sides on things like this. it was never going to last forever in the incarnation that we were lucky enough to know. Aw the best to all that were ever involved. Me, I still just feel bloody lucky to have been involved at all!

Agreed. The initial announcement caused a lot of confusion and a bit of panic I think, but at the end of the day I'm happy as long as Fence continues on in spirit and deed.  ;D

I'm not a massive B&S fan either but I think RL take twee, bake it in a twee pie and then serve it in twee sauce. No problem with people liking them though, just not my thing and I think emblematic of the changes in Fence over the past couple of years.

I'm not the person to ask but the AETC events I've been to have all be superb, intimate gigs, great bands. The Bunfight is case in point, 9 great bands playing to 100 people in 2 venues. More of that and low key releases, the album Kenny recorded in Mull over the summer will be a good start. I'm excited to see what does pan out.

I'm not sure that slagging off the most recent crop of 'Fence' bands is entirely fair, bearing in mind that tensions are still somewhat raised although perhaps things have cooled down a little since the 'announcement' was made.

I have never heard a note of music by Randolph's Leap but that photo alone made me never want to.  One or two of the girls looked kind of sexy mind.

I really liked The Shivers although admittedly I had a slight vested interest in them.

You're right, although in my defence my thoughts on RL were well known to those on this and the Beef that know me well. I really like the Shivers, disappointed they've jacked it in.

If the Aberfeldy line-up is still as you told me at the KC gig in London Stephen it will be a brilliant weekend.

I thought the shivers were pretty fucking cool tbh.

you know who I think is amazing but has never, as far as I know, played at a fence gig? Wounded knee. Saw him again tonight at matt toads gig. whoever is in charge these days should give him a shout for the next bunfight or something.

I really like Wounded Knee too. We saw him recently at an event the Museum of Modern Art where in his 15 minute slot he sang 1 song, it was mesmerising.

I'm not sure that slagging off the most recent crop of 'Fence' bands is entirely fair, bearing in mind that tensions are still somewhat raised although perhaps things have cooled down a little since the 'announcement' was made.

Hear hear.  Over the ten years or so I've been following fence there's always been one or two acts on the roster that I've been less keen on.  But that's kind of the point, isn't it?  I like attending fence events because I like discovering new music, as well as hearing old.  And the track record of coming across a favourite new band over the last ten years has been pretty incredible. I expect to hear one or two acts I'm less keen on as part of that (and they'll often be the ones that others are raving about on the message board).

It's sad that whatever's happened has happened, and sad that it doesn't look like we're going to see johnny and kenny play together for a while. Whatever happens though, I just want fence, or whoever, to keep on doing what it's been doing so well for so long.

You are very right Leckers.
Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I love Jo, but I wasn't wild about the Shivers.
Now that she is with Phosphorescent I have checked them out and found another new singer in Matthew Houck that I absolutely love.

Michael Hurley is someone I found thru fence that I love.

Massacre Cave is a band I can't stand to hear.

I love KC and Gordon and Pip and Dan and Kid C, but never got into Pictish's music.

We all have our likes and dislikes.

And by the way, I'm not fond of R.L. either.

I didn't realise Jo was in Phosphorescent, I'll check them out this week.

I contributed to the kickstarter page for Keith's new album but haven't ever receive a copy, not sure how those things work. I made similar contributions to a Josie Long film but nothing ever came of that either. I'm beginning to get a bit cynical about them.

Wednesday will be the day I finally mail out the vinyl to everyone whose address I have. Some of you have received your vinyl if you saw me on the road or are in Brooklyn or Manhattan. For the rest, I am seriously mailing Wednesday so if you never sent me your address (which some of you didn't) or you've moved, please email:

kzarriello@gmail.com

Thanks for your patience. I've been on the road and moving.

I've never had a problem with Kick Starter, though some have been delayed for various reasons.

Maybe I've just been unlucky and to be perfectly honest I'm happy to contribute with nothing in return but it is disappointing when you think there are 2 sides to the transaction and only 1 side is fulfilled. A bit like watching Aberdeen for the past 25 years.

This thread is blighted with short sightedness.

This is your 'thing' now isn't it?  Have you taken up meditation?

Attitudes change as the years roll by.  That's not to say that opinions held now are any less sincere than those held in the future.  Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you ain't never got that shit in the present.

On a vaguely related topic, people haven't quite yet learnt that its better to sit down, have a cup of tea and go for a walk before posting your opinions on 'The Internet'.  I believe KC has been saying this for quite some time.

Randolph’s Leap bring me out in a rash but I'm in the unfortunate position of being the singer. At least you guys can ignore it.

I've always found Fence events to be beautiful happenings full of awe-inspiring music, a sense of humour, warm feelings and thoroughly decent people. It's down-to-earth and human. Those are the things I'll always associate with Fence and I hope those values will be the ones which tie the two new separate strands together. Getting to be involved has been an unexpected bonus and an honour.

As a child of the 90s I was too busy doing kickflip mctwists and snorting pokemon to be aware of the subtle, secret movements of early Fence and Kenny’s songwriting genius. Luckily I've been able to go back and discover the weird magic of those early records and simultaneously enjoy the weird magic of the new music that has emerged through Fence in recent years. I praise Johnny for the incredible feat of preserving Fence heritage, keeping the legends alive whilst introducing people to life-affirming new stuff and doing so with total integrity and devotion. I adore his music too.

So anyway, I wanted to say hello. It’s a hard thing to remain detached from. I might come across as a grinning little twee twat but I do ponder these things and it bothers me to think that anyone might hold any genuine ill-feeling. I do hope not. I think it's great that some people don't like us. My only motivation has been to have fun and as long as Johnny Pictish keeps asking me to be involved in his musical world then I'll keep saying yes.

So thanks, it's good for me to read this stuff. It's healthy. I mean apart from the increased levels of paranoia, doubt and self-loathing, it’s totally healthy. I’m glad to hear these opinions (apart from coilsandco whose comment I find sexist and a bit creepy tbh). I’ve looked up the definition of ‘twee’ and I think if that’s our worst crime then I can sleep easy.

Well done to you messagboarders and fans everywhere for the amount of love that's been poured into Fence over the years. That’s what has made it so great to be around.

All the best,

Adam from Randolph’s Leap

What's wrong with being sexy?

Seriously though, and without wishing to get into a tit for tat Internet argument it was not my intention to be 'sexist and a bit creepy' and I hope that I didn't offend the women in your band.

I thought that I was making a glib and slightly facetious comment on the nature of band photographs, and how bands choose to present themselves in photographs.  As a Belle and Sebastian fan this is something you may be acutely aware of.  Is it presumptuous of me to assume that you're a Belle and Sebastian fan?  Perhaps you're not.  I love Belle and Sebastian.  I fucking hate 'Funny Little Frog' though.

I should really know by now when writing guff on the Internet that what one intends to say is not always the same thing as what others will take from the words they see wibbling across their screens.  I should probably be more careful in future.  Despite hiding behind a makey uppy name on this and other forums, I would still not like for people to think that 'coilsandco' is in any way sexist.  The person typing this does not consider himself to be sexist, and I would hope that my behaviour as I walk around my life bears this out.

Anyway, this isn't about me, this is about YOU.

I admire your honesty and also your cojones for coming on here and saying your piece.  I wish you the best of luck in all of your creative endeavours.  You appear to have chosen to climb aboard the good ship Pictish, so best of luck to you and your fellow travellers.  I await your maiden voyages with interest.  That's enough sailing metaphors now.

This isn't about you at all though is it?  This is about the 'fence statement'.  Or is it?  I don't know anymore.  Where am I?  I should probably get some sleep.

Cheers,

A78

nicely said, Adam.  Please don't be paranoid.  You seem like a lovely bunch of enthusiastic, talented people from when I've seen you play.  Music is a very personal thing as everyone knows - there is a lot of stuff that Fence has supported that isn't my cup of tea and there are plenty of albums I haven't bought as a result (and a couple I've bought but don't listen to because I prefer the act live).  Anyone who has the talent and the balls to get up on stage should be hugely proud of themselves and what they do.

As someone who only discovered the whole Fence thing just over a year ago, and who signed up to this blog thing a few minutes ago, can I say I find the bitchiness on some of the posts in this thread a little sad.
Not liking a band is one thing, being bloody rude is another and uneccesary. For the record, I LOVE Randolph's leap, but I also enjoy oddball stuff from early samplers etc.
I look forward to offerings from both Fence and Lost Map in the future....

"Mind that time KC was singing Diamantina Drover at the end of Homegame whatever and he changed the line 'these fences run forever' to 'Fence will run forever'?

That was a genuine wow moment eh?"

Nice one fuctifano - I've been trying to think of that song for about 2 years. That was a great ending to homegame with awbdy on stage singing the happy song.

Awesome.

As do I, but I'm used to being neither in the cool camp or the popular one! :)

There's an article in yesterday's Observer review section. It's called A fond farewell to Fence. Worth a read.

I'll give it a bash:

1 - a funeral didn't take place
2 - it wasn't the swan song of Fence records
3 - Fence didn't launch the career of KT Tunstall
4- Fence isn't officially defunct
5 - It wasn't the last official Fence event

That's enough for the first 2 paragraphs

I take most things I read in a paper with a pinch of salt. I'm just glad that Fence is continuing in some shape or form. World would be a worse place without Fence in it.

I don't think (all) people are daft and can read beyond the headlines.
she balances things out I think, starting with "But is this really the end of the line for Fence?".
I'd say the only thing wrong with her report is putting that nasty photo on it. Personally I'd sack the lot of them for that cheesy posing. Urrgh  :o

I agree but I think the opening paragraph should have made mention of the confusion that was prevalent last week and then gone onto talk about the 2 sides of the discussion.

Agree with broon...

Relatively balanced report, despite factual inaccuracies that are only obvious to the pedantic nerds amongst us...

It's only a quickly spun newspaper article after all...
