Title: albums of the year
Post by: stephen on Thu, Nov 23, 2017, 19:41 PM
Is there anything good that i've missed that i should be buying Mrs. Stephen for Christmas?

I would strongly recommend Songs From The Novel "Greatest Hits" by Kathryn Williams - especially the song Gethsemane - and the accompanying novel would make a nice gift too. Pleasure by Feist - especially A Man Is Not His Song - is also worth a shout. And I am completely under the spell of Not Even Happiness by Julie Byrne, which is mesmerising from start to finish. Having said that, I have listened to Greetings From Hamilton, Canada and Lino more than anything else this year, but I suspect Mrs Stephen may co-own them already.

Sadly not! The lyrics were written with Laura Barnett, who wrote the accompanying novel and also The Versions of Us. The recording features Neill MacColl, Kate St John and Michele and Romeo from The Magic Numbers, all clearly having tremendous fun. Enjoy tomorrow night!

I have the Seamus Fogarty album on constantly at the moment. He was great at the Hug and Pint tonight, great tunes, good banter.

Aye that's a good un. I'm always listening but I'll still struggle to come up with stuff I've loved.

in no particular order,

Arcade Fire - Everything Now
Not sure if we need a "quiet chat", or if I need to stage a full-blown intervention.

I'll give it some thought...

Andrew Wasylyk "themes for buildings and open spaces"

It's a great wee 10", did ye get one wi' a print in it?

I (rather serendipitously) got one wi' a photie of Duncan Of Jordanstone, where i studied sculpture in the 90s. That wis nice.

New things i loved this year were:

James Holden & The Animal Spirits - The Animal Spirits
Fever Ray - Plunge (not as enigmatic as the first Fever Ray LP, but it's well The Knife-y and that is just perfect, ta)
Dalham - Waves (Lush modular synth action)
Ed Dowie - The Uncle Sold
Coldplay - Kaleidoscope EP (Twa belters on this, sue me)
Bons - Gras H'utsi (new collaboration involving Kev Cormack/Half Cousin)
L. Pierre - 1948...

Reissued things I loved this year:

Aphex Twin - 26 Mixes For Cash (not a reissue but a 4LP bootleg...holy crap, this was a fudging be-yooo-tay to get...)
Dana Gillespie - Weren't Born A Man
Martyn Bennett - Grit (finally released on vinyl...)
Pete Stanley & Bob Wiggs - English Weather (Compilation)
Prince - 4EVER (4LP boxset) ...shame about the 7" edits of Let's Go Crazy & If I Was Your Girlfirend though...

Things from years gone by I only jist discovered or got around to buying on vinyl (which were ace):

Parsley Sound - Parsley Sound
The Metronomes - The Ballad Of The Metronomes
2814 - Rain Temple
Berntholer - My Suitor
The Wendys - Gobbledygook

Also bought a crazy amount of weird foreign promo / jukebox 7"s, but that's for another thread...getting the full 5 minute Love Song by The Minds on a Spanish 7 was a particular highlight.

 Michael Chapman - 50

(The new The Weather Station album quite good too).

Been listening to KC's Lino the most though.

Re-issue of the year (no contest) -

Lal & Mike Waterson - Bright Phoebus (the 2CD version with the demos).

I've tried to be all cool and nonchalant about this but the simple fact is that LINO has been the best new album I have heard all year. The only thing I can think to do when it ends is play it again!

I have the feeling that LINO is already in Mr & Mrs Stephen's collection...  But yes, I fully share your views - definitely the most played album this year, and it sounds even better on vinyl :) :) :).
This little masterpiece is also my favourite KC album so far, but then again I'm still navigating backwards through his immense catalogue ...

Ah! That'll teach me to read posts from the begining! Right about the Vinyl BTW!  8)

I've really enjoyed LCD Soundsystem's American Dream (which is contender for worst album artwork of the year also) and Steven Wilson's To The Bone. Lino too has been one of my favourites this year.

Does Greetings From Hamilton, Canada count as a 2017 album? If so it's my favourite album, waited so long to get my hands on a copy and it didn't disappoint.

Other albums of note:
The Imperfect Sea - Penguin Orchestra
Every Valley - PSB
Lino - KC
The Curious Hand - Seamus Fogarty
Strike A Match - Sacred Paws
Loving Vincent - Clint Mansell
A Kind Revolution - Paul Weller
The Deluder - Roddy Woomble
Miles Hunt & Erica Nockalls - We Came Here To Work
Miracle Glass Company - Eponymous
Catholic Action - In Memory of Catholic Action

Not released in 2017 but only discovered this year:
Empire Builder - Laura Gibson

Was Ziggy's Black River Promise this year or last year? If this year it's clearly a top 5 album of the year.

Backlash people just seem so shallow these days.
