Title: eBay thread
Post by: adamski on Thu, Oct 17, 2013, 13:21 PM
Hello,
I'm only signed up to two forum/message boards, this and teenage fanclubs board, anyway I see a eBay thread on the latter's board - I think it's a great thread! Anyway don't know if anyone else checks eBay for old discs however this is on sale for another few days! Looks rare anyway!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131019034446

Anyway hope this helps people trying to increase their collection!

I was following a Fence compilation called Glass a couple of weeks ago that went for 88. A Plum Duffers comp CD went for 46 on the same day.

Fortunately I already have the HMS G cds otherwise someone might not be getting a xmas present this year.

I just don't get the whole buying stuff like this on eBay. HMS G won't be seeing any of that insane amount it will inevitably go for.

It only takes away money that would otherwise be spent within the fence infrastructure.

Have to agree with this. I'd rather buy it from the artist or not at all these days.

I was in Fopp for the first time in years the other day. Bought cd from Africa, a book from turkey and a book from India. All for a tenner. that cannae be right can it?

Much agreed here. If anything, I'd like to hope that voicing a desire for albums here will result in their availability, which has happened with KC's back catalogue cdr's. I'd rather have to wait and have the money go to the actual artist, instead of lining someone else's pockets.  8)

I can see why people want to buy & sell but all generally gets a bit silly and you're right, it does miss out the most important people (artiste).

Can't wait to see the Fence web shop return in whatever form circa 2014. I'm saving my pennies for that & Easter!  8)

As 1 or 2 people have said elsewhere its more fun to see what you can pick up over the years at various live events - I don't mind now if I dont get everything Fence has put out, I like the not knowing what might or might not come my way.
I certainly don't want to hand over vasts sums of cash to a stranger knowing that KC or any other artist who's music I know and love will never see a penny of it.
Title: Re: eBay thread
Post by: adamski on Fri, Oct 18, 2013, 05:38 AM
I totally agree, I would much rather pay whatever direct to the artist! But unfortunately sometimes it's the only way to complete a collection, I'm guessing there isn't many artists out there that still re produce older titles!! Plus its good to see the artwork etc for albums u may not have seen before, a few months back there were quite a few old kc albums on it! The one with the Russian type writing on it threw me!
Anyway im hoping as what gingerbeard says, a fence webshop coming soon will be excellent!!

The waiting is half the fun. You never know what might turn up at a gig. I've been waiting patiently for a squeezebox set for a long time. I'm very excited as i'll be picking one up at Aberfeldy soon   :D :D :D

ebay has its uses (second hand car parts, in my case) but I agree that I want the money to go straight into the artists pocket and also love the anticipation of picking up a rarity at a Fence event.  Trouble is, not always easy to get to these but that does make the thrill even greater when you finally pick up a gem.

I would only forgive someone ebaying this stuff if they REALLY REALLY needed the money and there was no alterative but to turn to their record/cd collection to raise funds...

I've recently sold a bunch of things - some Fence related, but mostly my from my weird and wonderful collection going back twenty plus years. That's entirely because I need the money - and I certainly wouldn't want to part with it if there were other ways around it. If I could, I'd buy it all back tomorrow

What is really disturbing though is the rabid reaction from some people - and yes, some people on this forum and related places. The messages about being a "traitor" or a "scammer", the accusations that I'm somehow willingly depriving Kenny and his extended family of food (despite buying some of this stuff from him at gigs I paid to attend in the past!) or that I only ever bought it to make a quick buck. To be honest I was pretty shocked and genuinely upset by them. I've always found this a friendly spot on the whole.

I clearly didn't ever set out buy obscure things, keep it lovingly secure for years and then offload it for a massive profit. I spent a lot of money on music I loved, then life changed. Shit happens. What a shame people are so judgemental when fellow fans are having a tricky time :(

I'm with you Mike, if I was in a position where I needed money the only thing I have of re-sellable value is my record collection. Whilst I love my records you can't eat them and they don't keep you warm in the winter. Spookily, as I type, my cds I bought from you have just arrived. Cheers.

I have no issue with buying records on ebay, if it's something I really want and it's the only way to get hold of it then I'll buy it, if the price is acceptable.

It beats throwing records in the bin.

Which is why Dubster had it right when she said sometimes you have to do what you have to do to make ends meet and I am pretty sure everyone on here understands that and many will have been there themselves - both musicians and those of us who just listen.  Struggling to pay the bills isn't the same as trying to make a massive profit from someone else's hardwork and talent.
Hope things improve soon :)

yep, that was exactly what I was getting at.  Sometimes its easy to assume folk are just selling stuff on ebay to make a massive profit but sometimes its being sold because of genuine need for cash during hard times (I have already primed Mr D that if we ever find ourselves in that situation I am selling his WHOLE record collection)

I assume that everyone bemoaning the fact that an auction site exists conducts all their private business in a state of perpetual cash neutrality nor have they ever bought a rare record for more than the 5 farthings it was originally sold for.

I have no issues with folk selling records on eBay - most of the time it's the only way to get your hands on some rare Fence material.
Saying that though, 88 is a tad steep for that particular compilation if memory serves me right  :P

What it does show though, is the high demand for back catalogue releases.  If eBay selling in this instance is frowned upon for filling the
coffers of strangers rather than KC/HMS G etc., then I'd love to see a small run of reissues made each time one of these strangers posts
a rarity online for sale.   Then everyone wins...

...other than said stranger  :-[

maybe Automatic66 IS HMS Ginafore.  Now that would be a cracking way for an artist to raise extra revenue from rare releases.. :)

if i was selling my shit on ebay then i
would want as much cash as possible,
but, that said, whoever paid 88 for
the glass album is either a moron, or
someone who has far too much money.
Title: Re: eBay thread
Post by: czefski on Fri, Oct 18, 2013, 16:34 PM
Unfair to call them a moron, if they thinks it's worth 88 then that's to them. There must have been someone else prepared to pay 87, market forces. When I was trying, unsuccessfully, to complete my White Stripes collection a few years back I paid some silly money for a few very rare items, but I had spare cash at the time. Now that I've got to fund various overnight trips to the East Neuk I wouldn't consider paying what I paid, but a the time it was fine.

I don't bemoan the sellers personally. What if someone gifted you that cd and you didn't know it was worth that much? You can't really control that per se. And like others have said you may have a genuine reason to sell it.

But, even though I'm an obsessive collector of stuff, fence stuff isnt conducive to buying at these prices, second hand, where none of the money (aside from the original, probably loss making amount) ends up going to Kenny et al

I signed up for a username for the specific purpose of responding to this, because I think my husband has had enough B.S. thrown his way about this issue.
He's the one who is having to part with some of his records on Discogs. Some of you know him personally. And anyone who does know him personally, knows how deeply he loves music and how much he loves this community of musicians in particular. He turned me on to it. In fact, it broke my heart when he had to start selling off his vast and very awesome record collection, because it was both vast and very awesome, and also because it meant a lot to him. And that meant it means a lot to me too. But his sacrifices have been keeping us afloat during a new marriage, while I look for work in a bad economy.
I could go into more detail, but I'm not going to. Why? Because IT IS NONE OF ANYONE ELSE'S BUSINESS. If you are taking time out of your Friday night to wring your hands over what my husband is doing with his record collection, you officially have WAY too much time on your hands.
And paying with Tesco vouchers? Sure, theoretically, I'm sure we could barter. But we're not interested in bartering with judgmental a**hats.
I'm never going to be using this account again, so don't bother messaging me. I'm not Interested. Thank you.

provocative thread.  a thing is always/only worth what someone will pay for it and ebay is pretty effective marketplace for bargains and rarities alike.  the crux of contention seems to be what money the artist reaps/doesn't reap from art vs. product transactions.  clearly on this forum there is a lot of interest in art/product of a very specific ilk. how then to supply the demand for that ilk that is efficient for both artist  and admirers of said artist.  ebay in't it. i paid 5$ shipping for a $7 cd . . . . . . who reaps what there? i'll happily subscribe to a weekly/monthly release schedule if you're thinking along that line!

I can only recall a small number of stooshies, (this autocorrects to autopsies), on here and the beef and two of them have been about the disposal or sale of record collections. Presumably on antique furniture forum they have the same debate about the Chippendale family not getting paid. If has been doing the right thing by increasing supply over the past couple of months but there's only so much glue and spray paint fumes a man can ingest.

I think I'll start a thread about organised religion to calm us all down again.

p.s. The cds are in the condition as described Mike, much appreciated.

I'm glad they reached you czefski - enjoy them!

As for the rest of this thread, I'm seriously done with it. The PMs and messages I've received over the last week for daring to shift a bit of my own property are utterly ridiculous and make this little spat look tame.

The mad thing is, I've been selling my collection online since April. It wasn't until I "dared" (not my word choice, lifted from a missive!) to list a Fence title that this all kicked off. I saved them until last because I wanted to keep them, ironically enough ::)

I'm shocked and stunned too.

Full disclosure, I bought Let's Get This Ship On The Road for 30 on ebay earlier this year. I'll buy Kwaing a pint at the next event.

value for money there pal.
'let's get this ship on the
road' is probably my mostest
favouritist collective album.

I picked this up for a fiver second hand in Love Music (?) in Glasgow a couple of years ago.  Not sure if that's better or worse than eBay, but I was pretty chuffed.  Of course I'd rather my money went to the artist, but if the record in question is no longer available, with no obvious prospect of becoming available, then I'd rather own it and listen to it than not.  As, I suspect, would most of us...

Here's hoping that we continue to see more limited releases of old titles, so that the money does end up going to the right place, and everyone ends up happy.

And good luck to Mr and Mrs Mike - I'd hate to be in a position where I had to sell off my records, but if I needed to, then of course I would.

Unfortunately though, most of them are sh*te.

Surely if I buy something at the price that the seller is happy to sell to me,  which makes the legal owner. I can choose to dispose of this product in any way I see fit, wether it be eating it, using it or selling it on ebay. It is 100% my business and not a single other persons! To read that a person has been abused for wanting to look after their family or pay some bills I find completely unacceptable I have total support for mr and mrs mike and genuinly hope that things work out for you going forward

Sorry for bringing this up again but it's been bugging me all day. I just want to be clear.

At no point have I had a shot at anyone for buying or selling stuff on ebay.
I have certainly not sent anyone messages calling them traitors or scammers. Or anything like that.
If others have then I guess they feel strongly enough about it to do so. I think that should be between the sender and the receiver.

As I said earlier, I wish Mike and Mrs Mike positive vibes and hope things turn around for them soon. I don't know them but hopefully we can meet on good terms one day.

I feel bad if I've brought the tone of the place down in any way. I'd never want to do that but I realise I can be a bit of a dick sometimes. Sorry about that :P

So maybe if we can all have a Saturday night boogie to a silly song we would all feel better, no?

That's better!

Peace out folks 8)

I'm sure that the folk who run the AETC site would want to be made aware if Mike or anyone else was being sent abusive personal messages.

For clarity, it wasn't me selling anything on eBay. I've never sold music on that site at all. Never managed to get a copy of the HMS G set anyway!

As for me having some sort of plan to buy things, rip the music and then sell it years later - I've never had that kind of foresight, sad to say. But I do look after my stuff - mostly because I like owning and want to keep it.

Perhaps it would have been better to let the bailiffs take it at some future point than sell it to someone else who really wants it?

Jackie, if you ever want to sell your old mini can I be first in the queue?  My first ever car was a pea green mini and I was forced to scrap it when me and Mr D moved in together 'cos there was nowhere to keep it and the engine didn't work.  Broke my heart it did and I have ALWAYS wanted another one.  Love tinkering with cars these days so have promised myself that one day I WILL have a little mini again - can see myself as an old granny shooting around town in one :)

I won our copy of this HMS G Gem in a Tombola at the Leith Folk Club a few years back. It was a very successful Tombola overall. The other prizes myself and my posse won were a serenade street performance by HMS at the end of the gig and in a final scoop a free pass to sea The Royal Yacht Britannia.  A great Tombola, a bloody great performance and bloody great great and cherished album/s. Here's to her return!

outside the town hall.

Given where this thread has gone the fight should be at the Wankdorf stadium in Gothenburg

A whole ten, this is gonna be a stramash me thinks, just hope I'm one of the quick ones!
Asked the seller what a buy it now price would be, mentioning that a similar listing recently with the magazines to go with went for 88 quid, the seller said they would be happy with 70 quid!
When u break it down 17.50 quid per CD, seems ok in my opinion if they're something u really want!!, however I'm guessing theses discs were previously freebies???
