Title: The yes camp have forgotten one key thing
Post by: R on Tue, May 06, 2014, 23:31 PM
If you vote yes, you'll have to endure the Eurovision semi finals.

Just think about that when you're at the polling booths ;) :)

The semis are where all the 'action' is these days.  All the acts that make it through to the finals these days are polished (like Mr Sheen, not like the country) and you don't get the brief moment of change like a fat man from Belgium singing about his mum in the final anymore.  It's the second worst effect of the break up of the soviet states (the first is obviously the reduced chance of Scotland ever qualifying for a major championship again).

What about Ukraine though - human hamster ball, work of genius.

That reminds me, I have to watch all the Eurovision vidayoes.

The No Campaign have already clearly stated that Scotland will have to take the UK's place in Eurovision.
And will have to play off against Cornwall for a place in the Home Championships.

In case everyone has forgotten - semi final part deux is on in ten minutes.  DON'T MISS OUT.  The first sighting of a bearded lady since diamond mine jubilee edition is apparently on the cards.

Israel - first blatant key change of the night.  Gutteral.  Looks a bit like Margeaery oot of Game of Thrones.  Europop weesh.

Yeah that was dull. Malty bedtime drink, more like.

I liked the look of those Israel birds, but very dull song.

Hurrah for Norwegia ! Power ballad by Rufus Hound. The Danes appear to have messed up his sound levels.

Poor collection so far. I might have to watch the quarter finals next year.

Top use of the hair-fanage, though, credit where it's due.
Georgia OFF MY MIND.

Poland? Shouldn't this be the UK entry?
I said fanage not farage.
Oh. 1991 Euro Pop is still the best song so far.
Excellent use of gogo dancers. Is that milk in her pail?

Yes Poland, yes.  Slutty traditional dress, you got the memo.  Slavic hip hop, it's the new thing.  Accordion solo, PROPER winners this.

I saw A Hawk and A Hacksaw with the BBC Concert Orchestra last evening. Cracking stuff.

Rise Like a Phoenix - that's a proper song title.  Not the first song this year to remind me of a Bond theme.  Not bad at all.

Lily Savage meets Shirley Bassey.
Genuinely good drag act and song. I prefer the Poland one though. I'm not a beard man.
Fear this is the year for the novelty win.

Oh BBC3 with your down with the kids attempts.

Oh no, a boy band.

Oh well, at least they ARE a band (therefore NOT a boyband) doing the Scandinavian HERE'S WHERE IT KICKS IN thing. Likeable.

I didn't see any blokes in the Polish entry.  hashtag blinkers.

I was worried about the boy band, but they're OK.  I'd have probably enjoyed them if I'd seen them at 6 o'clock on Saturday at t in the park.

Ireland.  In other Irish news, my sister is married to an Irish guy and is 8 months pregnant, and my 3 year old nephew has decided his wee brother / sister is going to be called Potato.  With no encouragement from anyone else.

Ireland look like they should be representing Croatia.  And those lads are wearing skirts, not kilts.  It's OK, does have a wee bit of an Irish element to it.  Passable.

;D I get the Polish thing now.

Ooh, Ireland haven't done ethnic for a few years.
Seriously though, who writes these songs and thinks OMG THIS IS THE BEST SONG IN EUROPE?
When can Iceland take part? They'd win every year.
Again, I like the instrumental part more than the singing.
Who's she think she is? Sonia?

Yes Macedonia!  The hiding dancer, it's a Eurovision staple.  Thanks for respecting the past.  I like the spotlights as well.  Jesus that's a low cut outfit.  Nice to see Huey from the Fun Loving Criminals back on the telly.  Weak song though.  Like a poor Gina G.

The Mont Blanc Foot Tappers.
aka Mumford and The Swiss Rolls.
or The Young Waterboys (too subtle?)

He is wet and he is dirty.

I should like this but then I look at them and I listen to the words.
And the tune.

Greece is easily the best so far.
Would not be out of place on the popular TV show Alive and Kicking.
And Europe owes Greece a lot after EU banks nearly killed their country.

Slovenia have gone back to the Eurovision template.

One of my favourite jokes is this: "Are you going to Eastern Europe for your holidays this year?"

Come on Estonia. be AMAYZZZING.

Portu-Gal.
HURRAH ACCORDIONS !

She has Katy Perry Eyes. (And mouth)
Awful dancers. Like she insisted her two BFFs had to join her on stage. And they only watched Human League.

Wait a minute, is this their entry for a Song for The World Cup?
Stop looking for a montage tune, Garry Lineker.

Likeable.

Oh, I skipped Portugal by accident.  But I can remember her jumper from Tuesday.  Yes it is likeable, using their Brazilian ties to good effect.  Don;t think it will win, but decent effort.

I am at Netherlands, and Jack White is there.
Have I missed Monty Negro?

The dutch one is by a very long way the very best song I have seen tonight.
I was wrong last year - though I did buy the song.

Emmylou Harris and Bobby Valentino.
Sweet as a sweet thing.

Hungary are cheating getting americans in.
We'd never do that.

And he has a decent song to sing.

He's no Ricky Martin.

Okay, so I am done.
Now to check the finalists against my own high standards.

Hurrah, Netherlands is in.
And some of the other ones I liked: Hungary, Iceland & Sweden.

Not Portugal and Austria, but Montenegro gets in?

Where is Wogan to expose this scam?

Just going to look at the French one but I will await the final to see the so-called "Top Seeds".
I doubt anything will beat The Netherlands for me.

Good night to you and your expert advisor, if only the people moaning about Jools Holland could make their thread this entertaining / overlong.

I've seen the guy from the Flaming Lips in a huge hamster ball - he rolled out into the crowd in it.  Did they nick his idea do you think?

This is way cooler (and i think the flaming lips are very very cool!).  Worth watching on YouTube, I genuinely think this guy must be a professional hamster wheeler, even though there's no way on earth it's a real job.  Most of the times when there's a gimmick like this it looks like a gimmick that the person has been doing for about two weeks in rehearsals, this guy looks like he's trained at the Ukrainian national hamster wheel academy for humans since he was 6.  If they get eaten by Russia then at least they've gone out with a belter.

Actually, I will be out for a curry so here is my quick summary of the finalists.

Ukraine: Not bad, like a girl band with only one girl. Pop music.
Belarus: Cheesecake. Ricky Martin. Pop music, with touches of ethnic in there.
Azerbaijan: The other kind of cheesecake. Piano Ballad. Piano dullard.
Iceland: Kiddy Rock, like those AMerican Teen Punk bands with numbers in their names, but rousing upbeat bonkers (the official video is better than the live performance)
Norwegia: A power ballad without a power chord? Nice voice. I suspect he bases his career on Angry Anderson.
Romania: I like this but not too much. Uplifting piano house.
Armenia: You're Not Alone. But you will be if you spend too long listening to this cookie-cutter Eurovision ballad.
FFWD to the really good Amon Tobin-esque ending.
Montenegro: Jeez, have they made it so all the dull ballads come one after the other? Yawn.
Poland: Lovely lovely ladies. That is how to win Eurovision. Poppy thing with an ethnic twist to that one who used to be in Black Eyed Peas. Almost Balkan Beatbox -esque, which I like a lot.

Greece: one of the few songs that breaks out of the Eurovision template and starts with an actual rap with brass band sample. These boys might win the gay vote if they have not all left the room because of the breasts on show in the Polish entry.

Austria: Oh wait, I forgot the bearded drag queen. Shirley Bassey meets Georg Samaras on James Bond's patio. The 2nd best of the ballads, and one of the better singers. I just don't like it much. (The official video has a disturbing moment where the singer parodies that scene from American Beauty! I cannot unsee it.)
Germany are clearly going to their former colonies in the East. Accordion girl and Roxette looking singer. Pleasant and likeable, therefore no chance of winning. The most Fence-like song this evening. If KC and co were girls ...
Sweden: resting on their laurels a bit. Power ballad a la Barbra Dixon. #1 among the ballads. I am biased by blonde scandinavians, so SUE ME.
France: The french have consistently and successfully managed to send up Eurovision every year. And this time their novelty song is quite catchy. Lead singer looks like he's escaped from the Leningrad Cowboys.
Russia: A dark satirical song about the break up of CCCP, symbolised by the twin singers pulling apart their conjoined hairstylezzzzz. Has one of my favourite guitar sounds buried under a torrent or Europop.
Italy: Remember Republica? This is like that. Very listenable. Very watchable. Very forgettable.
Slovenia: Slow-venia. I think one of the problems with Eurovision is that we have heard this song before. Several times tonight.
Finland: Oh, a dull band thing. Uplifting pop like one of those pop bands the kids like. Keyboard sounds like it was made by Buggles. But don't let that fool you.
Spain: No. Big drums and small ballad.
Switzerland: I may have wrongly accused these of Mumfordism. Hopefully they do not dress that way tonight. Nicely encapsulates the way many of these are nice sounding songs that have shit lyrics, thus missing the point of a song contest. Nice fiddle break.
Hungary: American singer, excellent voice, one of few dark-skinned performers. Uninspiring.
Malta: Ah no, this was the Mumford one. Totally Mumfing their way through an anti-war song. Well done Maltesers.
Denmark: 1980s pop song. Unironically called "Cliche Love Song". Sure, they think they are being ironic. Dire.
The Netherlands: The winner. Whatever the fragmented racists and moneygrabbing foreigners say, this is the best song. I am going to buy it on itunes. A country song from the plains of Holland. (Disclaimer: it's not the AMERICAN Song Contest.
San Marino: and there's a buffer of old school, James Bond-esque Eurovision songs about Peace. Yawn.
UK: Molly: Same as ever, ie no worse than most of the other entries but will be snubbed by most nations.
Spain. On last, when famously, everyone is drunk.

In order of preference:
Dutch
Polish
Greek
French
then German or Austrian (same thing)

The top right ice cube is dedicated to anyone with OCD.

Totally agree on the Netherlands song Kwaing, at least it got second, a bit of a surprise in itself.  Think it was a good thing that Austria won though, seems like its caused a bit of a fuss across Europe and a lot of people have been really offended by the thought of a bearded lady winning, cause apparently we're in 2014 and still not past this kind of thing.  Good song, great performance, and a massive two fingers to close minded arses to boot, can't say much fairer than that.

I completely agree - The Netherlands song was great.  I wasn't going to watch but Ade's little song synopsis aroused my curiosity and made for a very enjoyable evening - we ended up watching the whole thing, checking out Ade's view just before each song came on. Spot on.  I thought Kim Cardashian with a beard was rousing but much preferred Netherlands (she looked a bit like Sienna Miller... not that I have an obsession with look-a-likes or anything...) Was dead chuffed Netherlands got so many votes as I thought they would end up with none as it was too mainstream.  Mr D and Jack particularly enjoyed Poland...
